Film Drop // Widows by Steve McQueen (2018)
I don’t feel that this film got the hype it deserved when it was released. Co-scripted by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, this movie transposes Lynda La Plante's 1980s tv series from London to present-day Chicago in a gripping and empowering heist story. Directed by Turner prize and Oscar-winning Artist/Director Steve McQueen, we follow a group of women who are forced to pick up the criminal hot potato left by their recently deceased husbands. The acting is top-notch, the direction is intelligent and the editing snappy and slick. And amidst the flying bullets and screeching tyres, McQueen deftly explores big themes of politics, equality, grief, pain and immorality through well-rounded, three-dimensional female characters.
